This course will analyze the design, implementation, and enforcement of political institutions that support energy, climate, and environmental policies. We will cover both international policies that involve multiple countries and domestic policies that can support or constrain international cooperation. Throughout, we will consider political and economic constraints and opportunities by understanding both the underlying physical systems and their political economy. While the course focuses on energy, climate, and the environment, students will deepen their understanding of foundational concepts from geopolitics and political economy. We will examine both historical cases and newly proposed policies. Students will design their own novel institutions and policies.
