This seminar analyzes the politics of policy making in contemporary Latin America. It explores the comparative politics literature in order to understand how political regimes, formal and informal institutions, and diverse actors (e.g., social movements, business organizations) shape public policy making with a focus on economic and social policies. Students will gain significant knowledge on the region’s history and politics as well as analytical and practical understanding of political aspects involved in policy making.  The seminar focuses primarily on South America and Mexico since the adoption of democratic regimes and economic liberalization in the 1980s and 1990s.
