Each student comes to Harvard Kennedy School with different needs and life circumstances — some students are single, others have partners, children, or both. HKS works with Harvard University Housing (HUH) to provide students with some off-campus housing options in and around the Cambridge area that are suited to their living needs.
HUH manages furnished and unfurnished rental apartments near Harvard’s Cambridge, Allston, and Longwood Medical Area campuses. HUH apartments range from studios to four-bedrooms, and several are pet friendly. The monthly fees cover rent and utilities, including gas, electricity, and water for all apartments as well as high-speed Internet for some locations. Students living in HUH apartments do not pay a security deposit or a finder’s fee. All HUH properties are located near Boston’s MBTA and Harvard transportation systems.
Some HKS students bring their children and families with them to Cambridge. HUH manages several family-friendly buildings that have protected playgrounds and play areas on site.
The Graduate Commons Program (GCP) is offered at several HUH apartments, and is a popular community-based “home away from home” living experience. The program is an opportunity for graduate students across Harvard and their families to get to know each other outside of their own academic programs. Each property participating in GCP has a Harvard faculty member living in-house who is the intellectual leader of the community and hosts discussions and social events throughout the academic year.
Students and their families with valid Harvard ID cards have access to the HKS van service, which takes passengers from the HKS Courtyard to HUH properties, including Peabody Terrace, 1 Western Avenue and Soldiers Field Park, from late afternoon to early evening, Monday to Friday. The van accommodates up to 14 passengers and two wheelchair passengers.
HKS students often decide to rent apartments or sublet housing that is unaffiliated with Harvard. HUH provides more information about off-campus listings, roommate finders, local realtors, and short-term stays in and around the Cambridge area.
Several HKS graduates share practical moving advice on the HKS Admissions Blog, for those who are considering relocating to the Cambridge area and who may be bringing their children and families with them. In addition to providing tips on Harvard and off-campus housing, they also give practical advice about preschools, public and private schools, and day-care options in the area.
