HKS Faculty Webinar Series

This webcast aired on September 15, 2025.

It’s often said that leaders can learn from their historical predecessors. But how can we do that in practice? Watch two leading historians discuss how leaders have made decisions at crucial moments and then illustrate with examples.

Fredrik Logevall is the Pulitzer-prize winning biographer of JFK and will draw on some of the key decisions of his presidency to illustrate how choices are made under pressure.

Rana Mitter won awards for his history of China during World War II. He will show how “Asia’s first power couple” – Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai-shek created tactics and narrative to try and save their country at a moment of great peril – the Japanese invasion.
