Program Overview
Are you planning—or preparing—for a major event? Whether you’re orchestrating for a global stage like the Olympic Games, a high-profile political convention, a regional marathon, or a citywide charity festival, the stakes are immense. So, too, are the challenges: safeguarding public safety, coordinating across sectors, managing intense media scrutiny, navigating stakeholder dynamics, and ensuring a lasting, positive community impact.
This is where Major Events: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges sets itself apart.
Designed as an intensive four-day, on-campus executive education experience at Harvard Kennedy School, this program brings together senior leaders from across the public and private sectors to tackle the unique, high-pressure realities of major event delivery. It is not just about preparation—it is about performing at the highest level when it matters most. Participants will gain the tools, insights, and strategic frameworks needed to confidently navigate time-sensitive decisions and deliver truly exceptional outcomes.
The program is led by Juliette Kayyem, a nationally recognized authority in homeland security and crisis management. Under her leadership, participants engage with a distinguished faculty whose expertise spans transportation, economics, urban planning, and security. Together, they bring unparalleled, real-world perspective—having shaped major events from every vantage point.
What makes this experience especially compelling is its immediacy and relevance. Faculty understand the urgency, visibility, and complexity that define major events. They know the pressures leaders face—and they are committed to equipping you with practical, actionable strategies you can apply right away.
If you are responsible for delivering a major event—or advising those who are—this program offers a rare opportunity to step back, sharpen your approach, and return with renewed clarity, confidence, and capability.
PROGRAM CURRICULUM
Major Events: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges will guide you through three primary areas of consideration: dual-use infrastructure and transportation planning, event planning and safety coordination, and stakeholder engagement. Through faculty presentations, case studies, and a simulation exercise, you will learn to assess and manage the risks and opportunities presented by megaevents in each area.
In addition to Professor Kayyem’s extensive expertise as a security advisor to governments, international organizations, and private companies, this program features insights and expertise from world-renowned Harvard faculty and expert practitioners on transportation, dual-use infrastructure projects, and public-private partnerships.
