Curriculum

As an IGA concentrator you are immersed in an intensive program of study that totals 24 credits.

In addition to completing the MPP core curriculum and an IGA-related Policy Analysis Exercise, you must also complete a foundational course on the core principles, concepts, and applications of international and global affairs. The course IGA-100 introduces important concepts and theories as well as the challenges of policy analysis in international and global affairs.

You earn the remaining credits by taking elective courses—choosing from the full range offered at HKS—that are specific to your interests and career plans, and are in the following substantive IGA areas:

  • Human rights
  • Environment, health, and resources
  • Security
  • Trade and finance
  • Science and technology

Professional Development

By complementing your training in international and global affairs with rigorous analytic, leadership, and policy skill-building courses, many of you will become leaders in a wide array of global organizations.

To best prepare yourself for the next phase of your career, be sure to visit individual research center sites such as the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy to identify research and funding opportunities in your specific interest areas. You should also confer regularly with the coaches at the Office of Career Advancementalumni in the HKS network, and faculty members with whom you have shared interests.

Among your professional development opportunities, you may wish to consider applying for a Kenneth I. Juster Fellowship in the spring of your first year. Juster Fellowships are designed to provide support for outstanding MPP students, including IGA concentrators, for field research or field experience in the areas of international relations, international trade and economic affairs, international development, international negotiation and dispute resolution, and global governance and affairs.
