The aftermath of the Turkey and Syria earthquakes – updates from first responders Photo

On 6 February 2023, two devastating earthquakes struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. There has been widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities since. On April 27, 2023, The Center for International Development (CID) presents Hazem Rihawi, a Sr. Program Manager at the American Relief Coalition for Syria, and Mia Tong, a Research and Policy Officer at Kadın Emeğini Değerlendirme Vakfı (Turkey). Mia and Hazem will share their first accounts as front-line responders in the aftermath of the earthquakes. They will provide an update on the evolving humanitarian response, perspectives of how well the international community supports local partners during this time, and what steps we must take now and more long-term to support frontline communities facing disasters. Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights and CID Faculty Affiliate Jennifer Leaning will moderate the virtual discussion.

This is a virtual-only event open to the public. Registration is required.
