​Event Description: Join us for a conversation with Justice B.R. Gavai in which Justice Gavai will explore the role the judiciary should play when creating laws and policy within democratic systems of governance.

Justice B. R. Gavai currently serves as a judge on the Supreme Court of India. Previously, he held the position of judge at the Bombay High Court. Additionally, he serves as the chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur. He is poised to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India by the seniority convention observed in the country. Notably, Justice Gavai holds the distinction of being the first Supreme Court Judge from a Scheduled Caste to be appointed in nine years, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan's retirement in 2010. He has authored over 150 judgments, covering a wide range of topics including the demonetization verdict, the Godhra riots case, the rights of stepchildren in inherited property, the establishment of educational institutes, and consumer protection, among others.
