Data Carpentry is a two-day, beginner-friendly workshop that will give you the foundational knowledge to take on data-intensive research with confidence. Data and technical skills are in high demand in the public policy field. You'll be able to use the basic tools and concepts taught in this workshop in your coursework and your career. Plus, you'll get free breakfast and lunch on both days, and build community with folks within and beyond the HKS community!


Here's what you'll learn and when:

  • Friday, January 31, 9:15AM-4:30PM: Tidy Data, OpenRefine, and R
    • Learn best practices for organizing your data to prepare it for analysis.
    • Learn how to clean and fix errors in your data.
    • Get started learning how to analyze your data in a reproducible way and visualize it.
  • Friday, February 7, 9:15AM-4:00PM: R and Open Work Time
    • Continue learning how to analyze your data in a reproducible way and visualize it.
    • Bring your own project for open work time, where you can get expert support from the Data Carpentry instructors.


Who Can Join?: This workshop is geared toward graduate students and other researchers. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools presented at this workshop. Both HKS affiliates and non-affiliated learners are welcome.


Requirements: Bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) on which you have administrative privileges. Before the workshop, you'll need to download the programs we'll be using. Details will be provided after your register.
