?The Carr Center’s Human Rights in Hard Places talk series offers unparalleled insights and analysis from the frontlines by human rights practitioners, policy makers, and innovators. Moderated by Sushma Raman, the series highlights current day human rights and humanitarian concerns such as human rights in North Korea, migration on the US-Mexico border, and the dismantling of democracy.Justice Luís Roberto Barroso (Carr Center Senior Fellow & Justice of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil), Ay?e Kad?o?lu ( Carr Center Fellow & Professor of Political Science at Sabanc? University) and Salil Shetty (Carr Center Senior Fellow & Former Secretary General of Amnesty International) will serve on a panel titled, "The Dismantling of Democracy Brazil, India, and Turkey"Please note this event is off-the-record.Speakers Justice Luís Roberto Barroso is a Brazilian Professor, Jurist and justice of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil. He is a professor at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He has a Master of Laws from Yale Law School, Doctor of Law from UERJ (1990), and served as a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School in 2011. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights.Ay?e Kad?o?lu is Professor of Political Science and a faculty member at Sabanc? University in Istanbul since 1998. She was Sabanc? University’s Acting President (2016-2018) and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (2013-2017). She is a member of the Advisory Board of Columbia University, Sak?p Sabanc? Center for Turkish Studies, and is one of the Advisors for the online network Free Speech Debate. She was a deputy member of the Board of Directors of the Hrant Dink Foundation in Istanbul (2011-2015). She has been a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies between January 2018 and January 2019, and is currently a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights.Salil Shetty served Amnesty International as the organization’s eighth Secretary General from 2010-2018. A long-term activist on poverty and justice, Salil Shetty led the movement's worldwide work to end human rights violations and spearheaded a significant move of Amnesty International's work to the global south. Before joining Amnesty International, he was Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign from 2003 to 2010, credited with significantly increasing awareness of and accountability for the Millennium Development Goals across the world. From 1998 to 2003, he was Chief Executive of ActionAid, a leading international development NGO. Salil Shetty studied at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and at the London School of Economics. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Carr Center.
