The Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program at the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights is proud to launch a new initiative on LGBTQI+ rights in the European Union. The initiative is led by Leo Varadkar, former Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland and one of the first openly gay heads of government in the world.
At a decisive moment for Europe, the panel will explore the promises and challenges of LGBTQI+ rights across the Union. While each country wrestles with its own politics, the EU is also called to stand as a guarantor of equality, dignity, and protection for all its citizens. What does it mean to be LGBTQI+ and European today? And how can the Union’s values be strengthened to meet the rising tide of backlash and division? This launch marks the beginning of a vital initiative to address these questions head-on.
