The Future of the Rule of Law in Israel

In Israel, the relationship between law, religion, civil society, and state power is evolving. Join us for a timely consideration of what lies ahead for constitutional governance and democratic resilience as our panel examines the legal, political, and cultural forces reshaping Israel’s democratic foundations.

Speakers:

Masua Sagiv, Senior Faculty, Shalom Hartman Institute; Senior Fellow, Helen Diller Institute, U.C. Berkeley. Sagiv's scholarly work focuses on the development of contemporary Judaism in Israel, as a culture, religion, nationality, and as part of Israel's identity as a Jewish and democratic state. Her research explores the role of law, state actors, and civil society organizations in promoting social change across diverse issues: shared society, gender, religion and state, and Jewish peoplehood.

Roy Peled, Senior Lecturer, Constitutional Law, Haim Striks School of Law. Peled heads the Media Lab at the Tel-Aviv University Center for Applied Research on Risks to Democracy and is a member of the Israeli Law Professors Forum for Democracy. He was the Chairperson of the Movement for Freedom of Information in Israel where he still serves as a board member.

Avi Bell, Professor of Law, University of San Diego Law School. Bell clerked for Justice Mishael Cheshin of the Supreme Court of Israel and for the High Court of Justice Department within the Israeli State Attorney’s office. He was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut Law School and Fordham University Law School.
