Hope Amid Horror: A Story of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Nicaragua Photo

CID's first Speaker Series of Spring 2024 features Juan Sebastian Chamorro Garcia, Hewlett Visiting Fellow for Public Policy at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame. His presentation is a personal testimony of his involvement in Nicaraguan politics since civic protests and governmental violence erupted in April 2018.  After announcing his candidacy to the Presidency of Nicaragua, he was arbitrarily detained by Daniel Ortega’s regime in June 2021 and spent almost two years in prison.

The personal story is also framed under more general Nicaraguan history and illustrates, using some historical and personal episodes, how Daniel Ortega became one of the worst dictators in the western hemisphere.
Chamorro’s presentation is an illustration of a particular case of democratic backsliding.  This phenomenon, affecting both developed and developing countries, has attracted recent attention among scholars.  At the end, Chamorro shares some thoughts about the development implications of such backsliding.
