The fall in birth rates, in almost every country outside sub-Saharan Africa, is now big news. The Pope has warned of a "demographic winter"; Elon Musk has raged about "population collapse"; and countries like South Korea, Japan and Italy face possible extinction.

Experts have focused on the financial barriers to child-rearing. But with government policies having little effect, it is time to consider the cultural issues behind the fertility puzzle. This study group will analyze the growing gap in political values between young men and women, which is most pronounced in the US; the rise of "situationships" and serial cohabitation. We will consider the struggles of women to combine work and family, and the plight of men who are being outpaced by women in education.

Finally we will debate what new policies might be invented, which could turn the tide. And what factors other than governments might impact culture.

This study group / discussion is open to all HUID holders. Registration is not necessary.
