Introduction to GIS Workshop

Back by popular demand, the HKS Library is hosting our second Introduction to GIS workshop of the Spring semester! This workshop will be led by Belle Lipton, GIS Outreach Librarian at the Harvard Map Collection, and will get you started using geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data. You’ll learn:

• Basic geospatial file formats
• How to import and style data in a GIS
• How to make your first map

Please note that in this workshop we will be manually creating maps to learn the basics of how GIS datasets are constructed and operate. If you are seeking an introduction to programmatic approaches to working with geospatial data, please email library_research@hks.harvard.edu or reach out to the Digital Scholarship Group.Who: This workshop is geared toward graduate students and other researchers. 16 seats are available to ensure hands-on instruction and troubleshooting. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. Non-HKS affiliates are welcome to register, but we are reserving most of the slots for HKS affiliates.

Where: Wexner 434 A/B (fourth floor of the Wexner Building), 79 John F. Kennedy Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.

When: Thursday, February 23, 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

Requirements: We will be using QGIS – a free and open source GIS – for this workshop. Participants must bring a laptop with QGIS installed. Download QGIS here. If you have trouble with the download, please contact us for help.

Accessibility: We are committed to making this workshop accessible to everybody. The workshop location is wheelchair/scooter accessible, and accessible restrooms are available. If we can make learning easier for you (e.g. sign-language interpreters, lactation facilities), please contact us and we will attempt to provide them.
