Mastering Commercial Book Publishing: An HKS Alum's Journey

Led by Ryan Prior, HKS MC/MPA '25, author and journalist

Ryan recently served as a fellow/journalist-in-residence at The Century Foundation. His book, The Long Haul: How Long Covid Survivors Are Revolutionizing Healthcare, was published in paperback March 5, 2024 through MIT Press and distributed by Penguin Random House.

The main goal of these sessions is to de-mystify the process of writing a non-fiction book (this does not include self-publishing) - from getting a deal and promoting your book, to understanding the marketing pressures publishers face.

Session 1: Tuesday, February 17, 12:00pm-1:30pm

You'll learn how to:

  • build and leverage your story, expertise and platform
  • find an agent
  • write a winning proposal
  • work with academic or commercial publishers

Session II: Thursday, February 19, 12:00pm-1:30pm

You'll learn how to:

  • work with your creative team and develop your workflow
  • manage work/life/book balance (if there is such a thing!)
  • learn how a book sets you up for your next act: writing op-eds, scaling an organization, thought leadership, running for office, startup advising, etc.
