Policy with Purpose: Ministerial Perspectives on Development

What does it take to design development policies that truly work for people on the ground?

Honorable Pius Mokgware, Minister of Employment and Labor of Botswana; Honorable Roland Layfette Giddings, Minister of Public Works of Liberia; Honorable George Opare-Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment of Ghana; and Honorable Suwaiba Said Ahmad, Minister of State for Education of Nigeria will share how they are addressing pressing challenges in infrastructure, youth empowerment, employment, and education. Together, they will explore how to shape strategies that reflect local priorities and deliver lasting, meaningful impact.

The event will open with remarks from Professor Zoe Marks, Faculty Director of the Harvard Center for African Studies. This will be followed by a moderated discussion led by Fatema Z. Sumar, Executive Director of the Harvard Center for International Development (CID). The conversation will highlight innovative approaches, community-driven solutions, and the difficult trade-offs countries face in balancing international aid, national sovereignty, and long-term development goals.

The event will conclude with reflections from Harvard CID Senior Research Fellow Dr. Gomez Agou, former IMF Resident Representative to Gabon.

This discussion is part of the Harvard CID Speaker Series, co-hosted with the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program and the Harvard Center for African Studies.

Open to Harvard University ID holders. Please register if you plan to attend in person.
