The Politics of Transforming Masculinities in the Wake of Conflict with David Duriesmith, University of Sheffield Photo

David Duriesmith will discuss how masculinities that normalize, promote, and reward men’s use of violence after armed conflict has ceased represent an enduring challenge for the international community. Recognizing the importance of this challenge over the past 10 years, international actors such as the United Nations and key states have increasingly called for programs to address, engage, or enlist men in order to secure gender-just forms of peace. Interrogating the politics behind such initiatives, this seminar explores whether efforts to transform masculinities can facilitate peace. And, if they can, what kind of peace might they produce?

David Duriesmith is a Lecturer in Gender & Politics at the University of Sheffield. Prior to working at the University of Sheffield, he held posts at the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne. For the past 13 years, Dr. Duriesmith has researched masculinities, armed conflict, and violence prevention. Recent publications include “Masculinities and Disengagement from Jihadi Networks” in Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, “Engaging or changing men? Understandings of masculinity and change in the new ‘men, peace and security’ agenda” in , and “From ‘It Rarely Happens’ to ‘It’s Worse for Men’ Dispelling Misconceptions about Sexual Violence against Men and Boys in Conflict and Displacement” in Peacebuilding. He has also conducted projects on how masculinities impact the transformation of war, the politics of responding to male supremacist violent extremism, the gender dynamics of peacebuilding,  and feminist international relations theory.
