How can African countries finance their development ambitions while managing fiscal constraints, debt pressures, and the need for inclusive, on-the-ground impact?

Following the 2026 World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings, this discussion brings together African Finance Ministers Hon. Jyoti Jeetun, Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning (Mauritius); Hon. Kitila Mkumbo, Minister of State (Planning and Investment) (Tanzania); and Hon. Khamis Mussa Omar, Minister of Finance (Tanzania) alongside Hon. Dr. Kaire Mbuende, Director-General of the National Planning Commission (Namibia), to reflect on the realities emerging from today’s global economic agenda. Together, they will explore how countries are navigating fiscal pressures, debt, investment, and growth while advancing national development priorities and economic sovereignty.

Drawing on experience across global institutions and national planning systems, ministers will share how they are mobilizing investment and translating growth into meaningful outcomes for citizens, while navigating the trade-offs between international partnerships and long-term development goals.

The event will feature a moderated discussion led by Dr. Gomez Agou, Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Center for International Development (CID) and former IMF Resident Representative to Gabon, and will conclude with reflections from Aissata Lam, HKS MPA’26 and Founding Director General of the Investment Promotion Agency of Mauritania.

This discussion is part of CID’s Road to GEM26 series and co-hosted with the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program.
