The Champlain Housing Trust (CHT), which is based in northwestern Vermont, is the country’s largest community land trust. Founded in 1984, CHT stewards 606 owner-occupied homes in its signature shared-equity program, manages 2,350 apartments and a motel for homeless families, and both owns and manages 140,000 sq. ft. of community facilities and commercial space. In addition, CLT offers homebuyer education and financial fitness counseling, provides services to six housing cooperatives, and offers affordable energy efficiency and rehab loans. In 2008, CHT received the prestigious United Nations World Habitat Award for its innovative and sustainable programs, which serve as a model for similar entities throughout the country.
