Study Group with Amb. Mari Carmen Aponte: The Global South Reimagined

Study Group with Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte: The Global South Reimagined: Business, Power, and Policy in Transition

The opening session introduces both the seminar's core theme and Ambassador Aponte's background. We will explore the Global South's transformation from a peripheral actor to a central force in international politics and economics. The session will identify the region and explore how we are intertwined. We will explore the historical legacies that still shape the North-South dynamics and how those affect our daily lives.

How are Global South nations asserting greater influence in global governance institutions from the IMF to the G20 and COP summits? What is the effect on trade, investment and development agendas? What are the implications for U.S. leadership in a world where emerging economies are demanding a voice. How does greater Global South participation reshape global political norms? Finally, we will explore the question of whether a strengthened Global South weakens the United States or its influence.

AUDIENCE: These conversations are open to members of the Harvard community. Please RSVP with a valid Harvard email address.
