CID Speaker Series: Transitional Justice: Enhancing the Right to Health through Truth Commissions

Transitional justice mechanisms have often had an impact that has exceeded their original mandate, and have played a fundamental role in development. Many post-conflict nations have benefitted from truth commissions, which have worked effectively to enhance human rights, or have paved the way for progressive government to do so. Federica D'Alessandra will present a few case studies of countries in Latin America and Africa where truth commissions have made ambitious recommendations concerning the government's obligation to protect the victim's right to health, and how this has translated into government legislation in some cases, and a tool to be waved in domestic courts in others.
