How MIT Partners with Companies and Governments to Establish New Universities: The Case of Amsterdam

MIT is partnering with two Dutch universities and companies such as IBM, Shell, and Cisco to set up a new institute of technology in Amsterdam. The City of Amsterdam recently held a competition for this $300M+ institute, which aims to develop technological solutions for the challenges of metropolitan areas. Cooperation between knowledge institutions, companies, and government is key. MIT is expanding its footprint, should Harvard follow its example? Why MIT and not Harvard?

Sjoerd Arlman is Head of Strategy at the economic affairs department in the City of Amsterdam and a former consultant for The Boston Consulting Group. He will provide insights into the partnership, the competition and the results, and draw lessons for other Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).
