INTRODUCTION TO MLD-805Greetings!Welcome to the introduction of this unique course.  As you will see in the syllabus, students in this course will have the opportunity to make decisions and give grant money to selected nonprofits as a result of their work in the course.  This class takes you beyond the walls of the institution, equipping you with real-life skills that will carry forward in all that you do.   In this class, you have the unique opportunity to learn about nonprofits and social enterprises in a way that goes beyond a surface understanding of sources of philanthropic capital, mission and outputs.  It challenges you to consider theories of change, system of processes, new and emerging forms of philanthropy including SIBs, social enterprises, as well as the effectiveness of the nonprofit sector, challenging in many ways conventional wisdom. The class has a very real impact: divided into groups based on social issues, students are allotted money to donate to a nonprofit, and will have the opportunity to decide how to give a portion of the $100,000 away.  You are charged with developing a deep understanding of your field and evaluating nonprofits that contribute to that cause, an extremely difficult task.  This final project gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to important organizations. In addition students will have the unique opportunity to meet with leading philanthropists and non-profit leaders through a number of co-curriculum panels and related activities.Thank you for your interest!  We are looking forward to working with you in the spring. Class starts on January 28, 2014.  Please contact us with any questions.   Christine Letts
