Street Bump Network

Our speakers this week are Chris Osgood and James Soloman from the Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics.  They will talk about one of their new initiatives called Street Bump Network. Street Bump is a crowd-sourcing project that helps residents improve their neighborhood streets. Street Bump provides the City with information on the condition of the transportation infrastructure in order to prioritize repairs and plan long term investments. Based on promising initial results, the City is exploring a broader range of uses for the tool–-road condition assessments, improving driver safety, and enabling higher utilization of existing transportation infrastructure–-and, funding opportunities to expand utilization of Street Bump.
Chris co-founded the Office of New Urban Mechanics, bringing to the office nearly ten years of experience in city government. Much of his work during that time focused on designing operations and policies that help cities engage constituents. The Office of New Urban Mechanics serves as an innovation incubator, building partnerships between City agencies and outside institutions and entrepreneurs to pilot projects in Boston that address resident and business needs. Before joining the City of Boston, Chris earned his MBA from Harvard after serving for 5 years in the NYC Parks & Recreation Department as its Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor.
James is the Director of the Street Bump Network.  James earned his Master in Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.  During graduate school, he created a performance management system for Mayor Cory Booker in Newark, NJ.  He has also been a teacher and community outreach worker.
