The Harvard Kennedy School Green Team collaborated with departments across the school to make the 2008 Holiday Party (Dec. 18) and Staff Anniversary Awards a waste-free event.

“Sodexho bought all compostable products like cups, napkins, plates and utensils so that everything can either be composted or recycled,” said Dara Olmsted, Harvard Office for Sustainability special projects coordinator.

Vidya Sivan, communications coordinator, External Affairs Office, and member of the Harvard Kennedy School Green Team, organized the Green Team on the day, stationing members at recycling and composting bins to offer information and advice.

The leftover food was sent to a facility on the North Shore that uses high heat to compost things like meat which is not compostable in a backyard composting unit.

Olmsted noted that without the help of Sodexho, the facilities office, Human Resources and the volunteers from the HKS Green Team, the event could not have been waste-free.
