Abstract

This paper seeks to integrate a focus on informal workers, who comprise 61 per cent of the global workforce – a total of 2 billion workers - into the global discourse on the future of work. It does so by focusing on India, a lower middle-income emerging country with a high prevalence of informal employment. It provides a global overview of the magnitude and composition of the informal workforce as well as insights, from India, on what factors have been driving – and are likely to continue to drive – informality and how to think about social protection, governance and collective representative voice of informal workers going forward.
