Preface

When terrorists operating under the banner of the Islamic State launched their savage attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015 the world was reminded anew of just how complex a challenge this will continue to be for the global community. Nearly five years following the start of the uprisings in the Arab world, the Middle East is less stable, less secure and more troubled and violent than at any time in its modern history.
