Abstract
Background: Rapid urbanization has fundamentally transformed human social interactions and community structures worldwide. As populations increasingly concentrate in urban areas, traditional social networks face significant challenges and adaptations. Objective: This study examines the multifaceted impacts of urbanization on social relationships, analyzing both positive and negative consequences of urban living on human social connectivity. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing demographic data, sociological studies, and psychological research from 2010-2024. Data sources included peer-reviewed journals, government statistics, and international urban development reports. Results: Urbanization demonstrates paradoxical effects on social relationships. While cities offer increased diversity and networking opportunities, they simultaneously contribute to social isolation, weakened family bonds, and reduced community cohesion. Urban residents report 34% fewer close friendships compared to rural counterparts but maintain 52% more professional networks. Conclusion: Urbanization creates complex social dynamics requiring adaptive strategies to preserve meaningful human connections while capitalizing on urban opportunities for social and economic advancement.
