Abstract

Why did countries choose one-on-one deals with US instead of uniting against the tariffs imposed against them? In this clip, Harvard economist Jason Furman explains why even close U.S. partners like Canada and Mexico pursued separate trade deals with President Trump rather than banding together for leverage. He highlights how this approach weakened multilateralism, broke the Most Favoured Nation principle, and reshaped global trade—rerouting supply chains to countries like Vietnam and Indonesia while making trade patterns more fragmented and regional.
